Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum)

Origin:

  • Tomatoes are believed to have originated in western South America, particularly in areas that are now part of modern-day Peru, Ecuador, and northern Chile. They were later cultivated by the Aztecs in Mexico before spreading to Europe in the 16th century.

Physical Characteristics:

The plant is a member of the Solanaceae (nightshade) family, which also includes potatoes, peppers, and eggplants.

Tomatoes are usually red when ripe, but they can also come in a variety of colors, including yellow, orange, green, and purple.

They are classified as fruits (botanically a berry) but are commonly used as vegetables in culinary contexts.
